Golf: Taib savours win at Nyali

Coast golfer Muzahim Taib carded 39 stableford points to win the overall Clubnite 2019 Golf tournament at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club in Mombasa over the weekend.

Playing off handicap 25, the humble home golfer’s victory came after levelling three pars at the shortest par three-sixth and the challenging par five-eleventh holes against a mixed pot of bogey shots in both nines.

“I have been down in the game, but practised a lot to produce these results. I will continue training hard to achieve more trophies in the forthcoming games,” said Taib.

Nyali Golf and Country Club management sponsored the daylong 18-hole tournament that attracted 120 golfers from the home club, Mombasa’s sea link, Leisure, Vipingo, Malindi and guest players from other clubs with valid handicaps.

Club mates, handicap 27Jiran Hiran on 37 points and long hitting handicap 03 George Munyao on 36 points were the runners up and third-placed respectively.

At Limuru course, home club’s John  Kariuki produced a round total of 143 gross (74,69) to lead day one in the two-day 2019  Limuru Open Golf championships and Brakkenhurst trophy on Saturday.

Great Rift Valley’s Simon Njogu shared the second slot on 145 gross with Vet Lab’s   Robinson Owiti.

The two-day tourney organised by Kenya  Golf Union, featured the country’s top amateurs, who are seeking points in the  2019 Amateur  Golf  Championship (KAGC).

The amateurs will now need to sharpen their golf sticks for the next KAGC event in the  2019  Coast Open (Barry Cup)  to be played at the sea-link Mombasa course at the end of this month.

Meanwhile, the 2019 Polycarp Igathe-sponsored July Mug played at Ruiru Sports Club was won by handicap 21 Bernard  Ngore on 53 points while handicap 17 John Maigua claimed the men winner slot on 42 points.

Suzan Mukururi playing off handicap 31 carded 42 points to claim the lady’s title, a point ahead of Wambui Rugu who was the Lady Runners up.

Ibrahim Lande playing off handicap 23 was the Men guest winner while the Guest lady winner was handicap  12 Mary Wanjiku who had 39 points and the Clergy prize was awarded to handicap 11 Fr.Andrew Githinji, on 31 points.
