Kenya’s Chipu qualified for the World Rugby under-20 Trophy after outsmarting Namibia 21-18 in the Under-20 Barthes Trophy Pool ‘A’ final tie played at the KCB Sports Club Ruaraka in Nairobi on Sunday, April 7, 2019.
Namibia painted the scoresheet first with Delron Brandt giving the team a 6-0 lead seven minutes into the clash.
Chipu got on the scoresheet after Brian Amaitsa escaped several tackles from his opponents to earn Kenya the first try in the 16th minute.
However, his teammate Dominic Coulson could not hit between the posts as he failed to convert the try, missing on two points.
Few seconds to half time, Kenya’s Beldad Peter Ogeta jigged his way past the Namibians to score Chipu’s second try, giving the team a 10-6 lead at the half-way mark.
Namibia came back sizzling in the second half piling pressure on Kenya and their toil paid off as Shaun Van Wyk scored a try for the Namibians in the 54th minute which could not be converted as Delron Brandt’s effort floated wide.
Chipu were reduced to 13 men after Emanuel Silungi and Were were sin-binned, leaving Namibia to capitalise on the advantage through Brandt who made the score 10-18.
However, efforts from skipper Bonface Ochieng’ and Andrew Matoka were enough to earn Chipu a 21-18 win at full-time.
The result means Chipu have booked a slot in the 2019 World Rugby Under 20 Trophy scheduled for July 7-21 in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil.
Kenya, who will be returning to the finals for the first time since 2009, had previously lost four matches in six finals that they had met Namibia.
