Five records smashed at Coast Region championships

Five records were set at the Coast Region secondary schools Term One athletics championships that ended on Saturday at Shanzu Teachers Training College in Mombasa.

Truphena Riziki from Mitangani School in Kilifi County set a new record in girls 100m after clocking 12.97 seconds to erase the previous time of 13.00 set by Bahati Mwakulola of Msambweni School of Kwale County in 2010.

Another record fell in 110m boys hurdles when Anderson Jacob of Njoro School, in Taita Taveta, timed 15.34 to beat the 2011 record of 17.47 set by Kasim Seif of Kwale.

The third record was shattered in boys’ 400m hurdles set by Daniel Kasina of Moi Kasighau in Taita Taveta of 1.00.90 in 2010 where Shimba Hill’s Kalvin Saito set a new time of 59.04.

Two more records were set in boys’ 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Kilifi County team smashed their earlier record of 46.06 in 4x400m set in 2011 to record a new time of 45.75 while in 4x400m, Taita Taveta County team set a new record of 3.34.75 to scrap off their previous record of 3.47.7 set in 2011.

Meanwhile, Mombasa County dominated regional swimming championships at Oshwal Academy, Nyali. The same venue will host the national secondary schools swimming gala on April 11-12.

Mombasa swimmers scooped the overall title to take the lions share of swimmers who will represent the region at the national term one games.

Stephen Ndegwa of Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa won two races. He clocked 27.50 seconds to win the 50m butterfly race and 100m butterfly in a time of one minute 02.41.

Nobby Nelson of Shree Swaminarayan Academy clocked 56.24 to win 100m freestyle while Rushab Shah of Oshwal Academy, Nyali timed 31.20 to win the 50m backstroke.

In girls’ category, Maria Biach (Shree) clocked 36.54 to win 50m butterfly in junior while Riva Karia of Mombasa Academy clocked 32.44 to win the 50m in senior.

Karia emerged best girl in senior category with Josline Awuor (Shree) and Light Academy’s Kimberley Nyawira settling for the second and third spots respectively.

In junior girls’ category, Maria Biach (Shree), Kreeshi Shaudi and Deeya Shree both from Oshwal academy, Nyali followed in that order.

In boys senior category, Ahmeer Chattase (Aga Khan Academy), Nobby Nelson (Shree) and Platinum’s Abdullah Mazrui and Abdallah Ismail followed in that order.

In boys junior, Rushab Shah (Oshwal) won with Stephen Ndegwa (Aga Khan Academy) and Shiven Bechra of Mombasa Academy settling for the second and third slots respectively.
