The Mukuru women’s volleyball team won the Betway Community Volleyball Tournament held over the weekend at the Public service grounds in Nairobi after beating Sarangombe.

The tournament used a best of 3 format which included 8 teams divided into 2 pools.

The 8 teams comprised of women teams from the slums in Nairobi; Mukuru, Lindi, Sarangombe, Kiambiu, Kawangware, Makina, Mathare and SJAK.

SJAK (Sports Journalists of Kenya) ladies team topped Pool B while Mukuru kwa Njenga topped Pool A.

SJAK beat Lindi in 2 straight sets in their opening pool match before having a walk over after Mathare seniors failed to honour their 2nd pool match.

Mukuru won all their pool matches before downing Kawangware in 2 straight sets in the semis and Sarangombe 2-1 in the finals to win the tournament title.

The tournament had been organised in partnership with Polycom’s development program that works with women from slum areas in Nairobi.

Polycom organises such tournaments for already existing women teams in Nairobi as an opportunity to create a strong networking opportunity among them and to create stronger social structures.
