Kenya Simbas captain Davis Chenge believes challenges the national 15s rugby team have faced will inspire them to victory in this month’s (11-23) 2019 Rugby World Cup qualifying Repechage tournament in Marseille, France.

The Simbas, who flew to Romania last evening ahead of Saturday’s friendly match against Romania A in Bucharest, have had to do without allowances and adequate international friendly matches.

With only winners in the four-nation repechage tournament (Kenya, Canada, Hong Kong and Germany) progressing to next year’s global showpiece in Japan, the Kenya Commercial Bank flanker has urged his teammates to turn their struggles into strength.

Ian Snook’s men got a second chance to qualify for the World Cup after losing 53-28 to Namibia in the African qualifiers in August.

“The mood in camp is encouraging despite being sidelined by the government. We all know what is at stake and every player in this team wants to play at the World Cup in Japan,” Chenge told The Standard Sports.

“As professionals, we are trying our best to focus on qualifying for the World Cup.”

Asked if the negligence has affected their preparations, Chenge said;

“Of course with the financial problems we are having, lack of support from the government has somehow affected our preparations, however, we are determined to do our duty, which is to play rugby."

“The team is motivated at the possibility of making a World Cup debut.”

The captain was quick to laud the inclusion of the experienced Shujaa quintet of Collins Injera, Nelson Oyoo, Andrew Amonde, Sammy Oliech and William Ambaka in the 30-man travelling party.

“The Shujaa players bring in international experience, speed and skills. Some of the players are able to play in more than one position. That will be a big advantage to the team,” said Chenge.

“This is a collective responsibility. In case we qualify, the Kenyan rugby will get many benefits in terms of exposure and more investments.”

Kenya will kick off their quest against Canada on November 11 before battling with Hong Kong on November 17.

The Simbas will then wrap up their campaign against Germany on November 23.

The winner will join reigning champions New Zealand, South Africa, Italy and Namibia in Pool B of the Rugby World Cup in Japan.
