Rugby: Big show as top guns chase National 7’s overall title

Series leaders Homeboyz are on course to winning this year’s overall title at the Christie Sevens, the final leg of the National Sevens, at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi today.

This is after the Paul Murunga-coached side sailed into the Main Cup quarter finals yesterday.

And should Homeboyz progress to the semi finals, they will have won the title for the second time in two years.

Homeboyz started their campaign on a high note, thrashing a combined side of Blue Bulls & TUK 26-7 courtesy of tries from Bryan Juma, Charles Omondi, Alvin Otieno and Michael Wanjala as Johnstone Olindi made two conversions.

The 2016 series champions would booked their place in the last four with a match to spare as they blew away Menengai Oilers 21-0.

Leonard Mugaisi bagged two tries as Jeff Oluoch, who missed last weekend’s Dala Sevens, announced his return to the side with a try.

Homeboyz were due to face Menengai Oilers in their final Pool B match last evening. 

Meanwhile Homeboyz’ closest challengers Mwamba RFC kept the chase on Homeboyz as they qualified into today’s quarter finals with a good run.

Kulabu beat invited Russian side Narvskaya Zastava 38-12 before seeing off University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine 31-12.

Against the students, skipper Eliakim Kichoi and Daniel Taabu struck a try apiece as Collins Injera also touched down. Mwamba sealed top spot in Pool A after beating defending champions Kabras Sugar 31-21 in a match which Kenya Sevens speedster Collins Injera scored a brace while George Omolla and Daniel Taabu also crossed the white line. 

Having scored 100 points, Homeboyz are in pole position to win the title they won in 2016 as a third-place finish quarantees them the overall title.
