The Egyptian has enjoyed an outstanding debut season on Merseyside, scoring 43 goals for Jurgen Klopp’s side, including a brace in their Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma.

Speaking to CNN, Salah lifted the lid on his gastronomic habits, including his love of kushari, Egypt’s national dish.

"Nutrition is so important, it’s part of the game," the 25-year-old said. “It has helped with my recovery, allowed me to sleep better and helped my body to adapt quickly.

“My nutritionist says that because I don’t have any fat on my body, I can eat what I want. I also don’t drink, so it’s fine.

“When I go back to Egypt, I call my friend from the airport to buy kushari for us to eat in the car. I pull my hoodie over my head, jump into the car and then I’m eating it straight away!”

Salah will spearhead the Pharaohs’ attack in this summer’s World Cup in Russia, having helped his country qualify for the tournament for the first time since 1990.
