Meru, Makueni and Kirinyaga counties have all qualified for today’s round 16 of the on-going Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association Games (KYISCA) at the Police Band Grounds, Makueni.

The three finished unbeaten in their respective groups to qualify for the next round of the competition in its fourth edition.

Kwale, Nakuru and Marakwet also progressed to the last 16 as runners up.

Meru County wrapped up their preliminary round with a 3-2 victory over their Group C rivals Elgeyo Marakwet yesterday, as Kirinyaga County beat Samburu County 3-0 at Makueni School Grounds.

It took only five minutes for Meru to take the lead through Dennis Mwenda’s efforts. However, his celebration was cut short by Titus Wafula’s equaliser in the 11th minute.

Moments later, Ibrahim Mwite made it 2-1 to hand Marakwet a slim halftime lead. But Meru came-back into the second half more rejuvenated, with Mwendwa grabbing his brace in the 55th minute before Emmanuel Okumu netted the match winner deep into the stoppage time.

Meru coach George Matu could not hide his joy, heaping praise on his players as they target the title.

“It was a great game of football from both teams, but I am happy at how my players responded in the second half. With what I have seen, I think these boys have what it takes to win the title,” said Matu.

In volleyball, Tharaka Nithi County women’s team saw off Kwale 3-2 in a thrilling five set encounter. Kwale overcame Nakuru in the men’s tie.
