"I don't understand why they are protesting": Ronaldo reacts to controversial penalty vs Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo says that Juventus should have no complaints with the controversial penalty decision which dumped them out of the Champions League.

Just as Juve looked to have sensationally taken their quarter-final to extra time at the Bernabeu, Ronaldo took a maximum-pressure penalty to help Real Madrid survive the most unexpected of scares.

Needless to say, Ronaldo converted it.

Real had found themselves three goals down on then night - and level on aggregate - after Mario Mandzukic's headed double and Blaise Matuidi took advantage of a Keylor Navas blunder.

Juventus had become the first-ever side to come back from 3-0 behind away from home in the Champions League knockout stages.

But Mehdi Benatia brought down Lucas Vazquez in the 93rd minute - and Gianluigi Buffon was sent off for his protests.

"Anything can happen in football and you have to fight until the end," Ronaldo told beIN Sports.

"We didn't play well, but we will learn our lesson and this will help us improve.

"We could have scored more goals, but Juventus and Buffon were really good."

At the other end, it was a rollercoaster for the Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who worked so hard to keep the Old Lady in the game before being sent off in the third minute of stoppage time for protesting against the penalty.

Ronaldo, though, told a different story.

"I don't understand why they are protesting. Lucas [Vazquez] was brought down from behind and if they don't give him the penalty, it's a goal," Ronaldo added.

"Pulses were racing, but I calmed myself down. I knew it would be decisive."

Vazquez added: "It was definitely a penalty. Cristiano played me through on the penalty spot and when I turned to shoot the centre-back came in from behind and brought me down. There is no discussion."
