Slum Boys celebrated new deal with win over Sony Sugar.

Mathare United admit they were on the brink of collapsing in the wake of financial crunch until Khetshi Dharamshi and Company Limited stepped in to save the 2008 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions.

Francis Kimanzi-coached men pulled on Ng’ombe-branded jerseys in their 2-1 victory away to Sony Sugar on Sunday, sending tongues wagging about their scintillating form.

Although details of the duration and amounts of the contract are not yet clear, Mathare United chairman Bob Munro is happy to re-unite with Ng’ombe saying they are a lucky charm for the Slum Boys.

“Ng’ombe were with us in 1998 and we won Moi Golden. They came on board again in June 2008 and we won the Kenyan Premier League.

“With the magic in the 8 and Ng’ombe, we are aiming for the title and we will try to win it without the need to break rules by surrounding the goal area with durable Ng’ombe wire,” a happy Munro told Standard Sports, yesterday.

He added: “We will be communicating in due course the duration and value of the sponsorship, but I would say it is a huge relief for us all in the Mathare United family.”

Mathare United parted ways with a betting firm and an insurance company recently further compounding their precarious financial position.

Mathare United have been in scintillating form this season and now sit fourth on the KPL log, two points adrift of leaders Gor Mahia.

Both Munro and the club CEO Jecton Obure agreed that being on Free-To-Air television was a major factor when they pitched for the sponsorship.

“Being on Free-To-Air is a big advantage. We also have a a good history with the Ng’ombe wire manufacturer. We need more sponsors on board,” Mathare United CEO Obure said.

MediaPro produces the KPL on HD quality and distributes to local Free-To-Air stations.

Meanwhile, Ulinzi Stars captain James Saruni has rubbished reports that 18 KPL club captains will lead their colleagues to strike should the league body fail to find a title sponsor.

“I don’t know where all this came from. I’m a professional and I know my responsibilities. At no time have I sat or discuss with anyone in any form about going on strike,” Saruni told Standard Sports.
