AFC Leopards say they will honour tomorrow’s Super Cup match against arch-rivals Gor Mahia in Nakuru.

Coach Robert Matano said the team had been considering pulling out of the tournament due to lack of prize money.

“We had a problem with the fact that there is no prize money in the tournament and a decision had been made for us not to honour the fixture after we held talks,” he said.

Matano said he had supported the idea of boycotting the fixture considering that club officials have spent so much to prepare the team.

“In this age and era, you cannot play for nothing and in this regard, the club officials had my support to pull out. This is just a friendly match and it is better to use our little resources on the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and Confederations Cup,” he added.

KPL Chief Executive Officer Jack Oguda confirmed that the club will honour the match.

“We have met AFC Leopards officials who have assured us they will travel to Nakuru and so the match will go on as scheduled. There is no issue,” Oguda said.

AFC Leopards Organising Secretary Timothy Lilumbi had said that the team will not honour the fixture if they are forced to pay players’s allowances and for their accommodation. [Gilbert Wandera]
