Players focused on next moves as league resumes
The Kenya National Chess League resumed at the weekend after a one-month break.
Eastlands Chess Club thrashed Checkmates 5-0 in one of the biggest victories of the weekend.
The winners registered victories through Geoffrey Malaga, Elijah Kiburi, Boniventure Alusa, Grace Amanda and Ernest Otanga at the KCB Sports Club.
Visiting Mombasa Chess Club found the going tough in their first match as they went down 3-2 to Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
The visiting club picked victories through Peter Ganga and Agnes Thuo, who beat Tevin Otieno and Mary Gacheru respectively.
The university students ensured victory through Jasper Hawi, who beat Andrew Mumia, and Allan Tulienge who defeated Nixon Mwamburi.
Another encounter
Wilson Nyangweso also beat Andrew Syangombe in another encounter.
Visitors Kisumu Chess Club also found themselves on the receiving end when they lost to University of Nairobi. The students won 4.5-5.
Trevor Mulindi beat Bob Odhiambo in the first match before Lucy Wanjiru edged out Jerry Onyango.
Dadan Rwamba also won his match against Arthur Kirui while Jane Wambugu picked a point for Kisumu after drawing against Cheryl Ngima.
Last year’s runner-up KCB were too good for Kenyatta University whom they beat 4.5-0.5.
Wins by Ben Magana, Harold Wanyama, Philip Singe and Gweyani Jumba propelled the bankers to victory.
