Wenger to take 'My way or the highway' stance at Tuesday's decisive board meeting

Arsene Wenger will demand the full support and backing of the Arsenal board to continue as their manager.

Boss Wenger wants to hear assurances at Tuesday’s board meeting that they are behind him after being left frustrated this season and feeling they have not supported him enough.

He has urged them to make a decision based on “competence, not popularity” and says there can be “no doubt” he is the right man for the job after winning the FA Cup for the third time in four years.

Wenger, in charge since 1996, knows he has the full support of majority shareholder Stan Kroenke but has doubts about some of the other board members as he has felt isolated during a turbulent season which ended in triumph with the FA Cup victory.

Wenger: FA Cup win my presentation for new deal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes his team’s FA Cup win was the best presentation he could give for a new contract.

Wenger’s men claimed the trophy for the third time in four seasons with a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday.

The Frenchman’s future has been debated for months, with his contract expiring at the end of the campaign.

While that remains unclear, Wenger said the win was the perfect example of what Arsenal were capable of under his guidance.

“The best presentation is to watch the game,” he said. “I’ve played until the end of my contract. I think I have shown you that I have the same commitment.”

“For me, the contract does not have special meaning but, because of the debate, maybe I should have sorted that out earlier.”

The FA Cup victory was Wenger’s seventh in charge of Arsenal. [PA]
