Mwamba RFC’s centre Billy Odhiambo and Kenya Harlequin forward Willy Ambaka were among the best players at the Wellington IRB Sevens at Wespac Stadium in New Zealand over the weekend.
Odhiambo has gone on top of the overall series performance tracking index after a string of consistent performances from the three legs so far.
Odhiambo leads with 134 points ahead of Dan Norton of England 127, South African Seabelo Senatla 121, Justin Douglas of Canada 116, Werner Kok of South Africa 112, Willy Ambaka of Kenya 110 and Perry Baker of USA 110 points.
However, Odhiambo was ranked third overall best player at the Wellington Sevens Senatla who amassed 50 points to emerge HSBC Player of the Final award. Odhiambo emerged third with 47 points and Ambaka fourth with 46 points.
Odhiambo’s performance index will be a welcome statistic for the Kenya Sevens team heading to Sydney this weekend for the fourth leg of the series.
Kenya won the Challenge Trophy (formerly Bowl Trophy) and eight points that takes their tally to 25.
In the Sydney Sevens, Kenya will come up against series leader South Africa, England and Japan in Group A, easily the pool of death.
South Africa won the Wellington Sevens to pocket the maximum of 22 points to lead the series with 63 points ahead of Olympic Champions Fiji 51 and England 49 points. They (South Africa) start as hot favourites.
