Nairobi, Kenya: It will take a while before mobile users can have faster Internet and download speeds on their handsets.

This follows a delay by Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) to release spectrum to operators who are ready to deploy this technology.

Safaricom currently offers 3G network and is ready to roll out the 4G. However, the firm’s Chief Finance Officer John Tombleson said it will only take a couple of months to upgrade to the 4G network, including connecting fibre, to all the company’s base stations.

“What we need is spectrum from Government,” he said.

ICT Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said there are issues that need to be sorted out, including a stakeholders’ forum for consultations before the roll out.
