James Karanja, 57, heaved a sigh of relief as his wheelchair squeaked into a queue at a free medical check-up at Nakuru GK Prison on a Saturday afternoon.

Unlike other inmates, Karanja, who is serving a life imprisonment, was dressed in blue, suggesting he was a reformed inmate and trustee.
