Two men arrested for allegedly forcing their wives to undergo FGM

Two men in Kacheliba sub-county in West Pokot County have been arrested for compelling their wives to undergo outlawed female genital mutilation.

The women who were found writhing in pain and bleeding excessively were rushed to Kacheliba sub-county hospital. They were later referred to Amudat District Hospital in Uganda.

A doctor at the facility informed Lokichar chief William Riamakira who with the help of police officers apprehended the men.

The two women are said to have been married for more than two years and already had borne children.

Riamakira has warned the residents against involving their daughters and wives in female genital mutilation.

“We warn locals from forcing their wives and daughters to undergo FGM. The law will catch up with you,” he said.

The two suspects are currently being held at Kacheliba police station and will be arraigned in court.

The chief added that two other suspects who were performing the outlawed act disappeared and are being sought by police.

“We are looking for two suspects who carried out the outlawed act,” the chief added.
