Man, 24, strangles teen niece to death

Police are holding a 24-year-old man suspected of killing a secondary school student in Weseges Location, Subukia Sub-county.

The man is said to have trailed Mary Wanjiru, a 17-year-old Form Two student at Paul Keriko Mixed Secondary School as she walked home, and attacked her yesterday evening.

Police reports say Wanjiru's neck had bruises, a sign that she was strangled. Subukia Sub-County Police Commander Samuel Imbwaga said there were signs of a struggle at the scene where Wanjiru's body was recovered.

The man, a casual labourer and an uncle to Wanjiru, was arrested by police while at his house after he confessed to the murder.

We will arraign the suspect in court. During interrogation, he admitted to having committed the crime,” said Mr Imbwaga.

Wanjiru's mother Grace Njoki told The Standard that she left her daughter at home at around 2pm on Wednesday. She later received news of the murder through a phone call later in the evening.
