Police uncover bhang worth Sh2m on motorist involved in road accident

Naivasha officers inspect bhang consignment netted from a motorist who was involved in an accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

Transport along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway was disrupted for hours after a motorist ferrying bhang valued at Sh2 million was involved in an accident.

The early morning motor accident that occurred near Marula farm in Naivasha caused a huge traffic snarl-up, as the illicit drugs that were destined to the capital city littered the busy highway.

The driver of the car was seriously injured as his passenger escaped from the scene with injuries. The driver was trapped in the wreck before being rescued and taken to hospital under police guard.

Witnesses said the car was speeding towards Nairobi before colliding head-on with another.

Traffic police who rushed to the scene were in shock on discovering that the driver was ferrying drugs.

According to Naivasha Sub County Police Commander Samuel Waweru, the motorist transporting bhang and heading towards Nairobi attempted to overtake a fleet of vehicles when the accident occurred.

“It was obvious the motorist ferrying contrabands was speeding in an attempt to avoid police manning several roadblocks mounted along the busy highway,” he said.

Waweru said the driver was rushed to Naivasha hospital where he was undergoing treatment under police watch.

The occupant of the other car escaped unhurt during the morning incident, with police launching a manhunt for the other suspect who fled from the scene.

Waweru said they suspected the bhang with an estimated street value of Sh1.5m was destined for Mombasa from the Western part of the country.

In September last year, Police raided the home of a suspected drug dealer and netted 11 bags and 80 stones of bhang with an estimated street value of Sh2m.

Acting on a tipoff, the officers struck at suspect’s Kayole homes situated in the outskirts of Naivasha but the owner managed to escape.
