Senator injured during demo at university

Eldoret, Kenya: A senator was on Wednesday injured during a demonstration by residents and University of Eldoret  students.

Senator Isaac Melly was hospitalised at Elgon View Hospital after he was allegedly roughed up by police as he and the residents marched towards the institution's gate.

"I was rescued by a good Samaritan who drove me to the hospital," he said. Melly accused the police of using excessive force to disperse the demonstrators protesting alleged nepotism at the institution.

Also injured was a nominated Member of County Assembly Caroline Chepkosgei. "They lobbed teargas canisters at our car and later kicked me in the stomach and I am expectant," she said.

Chepkosgei, who was also admitted to Elgon View Hospital, lashed out at the police for breaking up a peaceful demonstration.

"I am also a third year student at the university taking Agri-economics and the concerns raised are genuine and deserve attention," she said.

A source revealed the university's top managers held a meeting to deliberate whether to shut it down to avert further disruptions.
