Trial of ‘Baragoi massacre’ suspects to begin today after 3 adjournments

The trial of seven local Turkana leaders charged in relation to the killing of 42 police officers in Suguta Valley in Baragoi is set to start in a Nakuru court today.

The suspects, including a ward rep, four local chiefs and two elders, are facing charges of robbery with violence, specifically in relation to 12 of the officers killed and 501 heads of cattle that were stolen.

The officers were killed while on a livestock recovery mission in Lomirok village in Baragoi on the night of October 20, 2012.

The trial has been adjourned three times after the prosecution failed to present witnesses in court.

Lady Justice Hellen Omondi, currently in Bungoma, adjourned the case in June after witnesses failed to show up.

The case is listed for hearing today before another judge, Janet Mulwa.

not prudent

The seven suspects, who are out on a Sh5 million bond, are MCA Lawrence Lorunyei, chiefs Christopher Lokerach, Enoi Lesike, Amojong Loturo and Jeremiah Ekurao, reservist Loomira Looyen and ranger Ekai Loyee.

Seeking adjournment the last time, the prosecution told Justice Omondi there was a communication breakdown with a Baragoi-based police officer who was to testify.

The defence lawyers, Robert Ndubi and Solomon Wamwayi, objected to the adjournment, saying the accused had suffered travel constraints.

Mr Ndubi noted the hearing had always been adjourned without convincing reasons from the prosecution.

Justice Omondi ruled it would not be prudent for the court to paralyse the prosecution's case and gave them a chance to reorganise themselves.
