Tusker coach James Nandwa says he was focused on winning the Football Kenya Cup as a consolation if he misses out on the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title.
The tournament enters its quarter-final stage this weekend and Tusker are paired with fellow Premier League side Karuturi Sport.
Nandwa said: "We are determined to represent the country at continental level next year and that is why we are taking the Cup competition seriously."
Nandwa said he wants to ensure the club represents the country in a major competition something they have not done in the recent past.
Winners of the competition will qualify to fly the country’s flag in the CAF Confederations Cup.
CUP COMPETITION
Most top clubs have not been keen to take part in the Cup competition, as it does not offer the winners any incentives and considering they have to spend a lot of money to honour the continental matches.
AFC Leopards are the tournament’s defending champions and will also be in action this weekend hosting Bidco United in another quarter-final match.
Leopards reached only the first round of the Confederations Cup last year despite having won the first leg 3-0 against Banks of Ethiopia at Nyayo National Stadium.
The club will be hoping to defend the title and perhaps do better in their second year and with the league title out of their reach, winning the Cup competition will be a consolation.
kpl champions
Another team that will be looking for some form of consolation are KPL champions Sofapaka who host a Local Government side in this weekend’s Cup ties.
Sofapaka are almost out of contention in the league, but will surely not want to end the season empty handed.
The last quarter-final fixture pits West Kenya against Western Stima.
