Get rid of irritating smells

By Pocyline Karani

There are a broad range of causes of odours at home and they require different solutions. When your home is swarmed by different kinds of unpleasant smells, the first thing you may need to do is locate the cause of the offending smell.

This may seem simple but actually it is not because your nose may lead you to the kitchen when the problem is actually in the drain trap of your sink.

For a smelly sofa, sprinkle baking soda underneath the cushions of the couch as this will tend to pull the oduor into itself instead of sticking in the couch.

Additionally you could also use a Lysol, which if your timing is right you will not only be spraying it on the couch and removing the odour, but also on the guest as well, removing him too.

Smelly drain

For a smelly drain trap of your sink, create a mixture of a 250 ml or so of your favourite bleach with three equal parts water and pour it down the sink. Similarly, make it a habit of pouring boiling water mixed with bicarbonate of soda after doing your dishes at least once a week.

Pets that live indoors tend to leave smells around the house. Bust such odours using your preferred deodorizer readily available in the shops.

Some household odours cannot be pinpointed, in such a case, use a few drops of essential oils in a cotton ball and place it unnoticeably in each room. It lasts for months and is very inexpensive. On the other hand, cigarette smoke can be eliminated using lighted candles in the room, placing small bowls of vinegar in the corners of the room, or soaking a towel in water and swishing it around the room.

To rid your cutting board of onion or garlic smells, rub the surface with the cut side of a lime or lemon. A paste of baking soda and water will also work.
