Impeachment motion: Ruto to know fate on Thursday

Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto

The Bomet County Assembly will on Thursday debate an impeachment motion against Governor Isaac Ruto. In the motion sponsored by Kembu MCA Julius Korir, Mr Ruto is accused of abuse of office and incompetence.

"...Ruto...has continued to violate the provisions of the Constitution, committed serious economic crimes, abused and demeaned the office of the governor, and failed to show the competence required in the carrying out of the functions of the office of the governor," the notice of motion partly reads.

Among other accusations include misappropriating public funds, presiding over the mismanagement of county resources, allowing non-procedural recruitment of staff and allocating himself tenders either directly or through relatives and other proxies.

"On several occasions, the governor has been accused of misappropriating public funds to the tune of hundreds of millions of shillings and has deliberately been dishing out county resources on grounds of favoritism and with little regard for crucial county planning documents such as the County Integrated Development Plan, Annual Development plan, Fiscal Strategy Paper and the County Budget," the motion reads.

The impeachment motion has been in the offing for a long time as the relationship between the Bomet county executive and the county assembly has been anything but amiable.

The frosty relationship has seen impeachment motions against Speaker Geoffrey Kipngetich and former Finance Executive David Cheruiyot.
