Two people have been confirmed dead while scores of others have sustained serious injuries after a truck lost control and crashed into pedestrians in Migori town.
The truck also hit four vehicles during the accident.
Brakes are said to have failed as the truck approached the Posta roundabout on Awendo-Migori road.
Migori County Referral Hospital's Medical Superintendent Ian Oomo said they received one body and 11 people who sustained serious injuries from the accident.
The Standard has learned that one other person has died in hospital while receiving treatment.
"The injured people have been taken to the casualty wing for emergency care," Oomo said.
Police visited the scene immediately after the accident occurred to conduct a rescue mission.
Suna West sub-county police commander Elizabeth Walukoba said the truck was ferrying sand.
"We have only confirmed one fatality as we are still checking in other hospitals to confirm if there are more deaths and injuries," Ms Walukoba said.
The accident comes barely a month after another one that also involved a truck, which killed six people.
The truck which was transporting rice ploughed into pedestrians and boda boda riders who had parked by the roadside on the Migori-Isebania road, just 200 meters from Migori Primary School.
The vehicle is said to have had a mechanical problem.
