Kisimu, Kenya:  A former senior editor with The Standard, Amos Marenya, has died. Marenya, 50, passed away on Monday last week at a Kisumu hospital after a brief illness.

He served The Standard in various capacities, starting as a reporter in 1984 before proceeding to Kisumu as the bureau chief of Nyanza and Western regions.

He returned to the head office as news editor in 1988. He also served as head of the Nyeri bureau. He will be buried on Saturday at Gem Kaumara.

Marenya’s brother, Tom Odhiambo, said his death was a result of cardiac arrest.

“He has been in and out of hospital since July, as his health deteriorated,” Odhiambo told The Standard.

His family described him as a down-to-earth man.

Marenya has left behind four children; his wife died a few years ago.
