Isiolo Residents threaten to recall MCAs after fracas

ISIOLO: A day after four Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) were injured following an outright clash between the two rival sides, Isiolo voters now want the ward representatives to resign or they recall them.

Wednesday, the residents who included businessmen and village elders said the assembly had failed the county in the last 14 months and demanded that the MCAs and the speakers step down or be forced out of office through Constitutional means.

On Tuesday, the two rival MCAs fought in the assembly after they failed to agree over when the House should be reconvened.

The voters heaped blame on both the assembly and the executive. They also blamed leaders both elected and those who lost the 2013 polls.

STALLED PROJECTS

The County Contractors Association chairman Ismail Galma claimed traders contracted to provide services have not been paid since May last year adding that many crucial projects had stalled. ‘’The business community is concerned with the current situation. Our members have not been paid for work done,’’ he said.

 ‘’We have talked to both sides, but have not made any headway. The residents can now adopt constitutional way of invoking the recall clause,’’ said Ismail Galma, a former Wabera Ward councillor in the defunct Isiolo County Council.

NO DEVELOPMENT

‘’We wait for the political protagonists to resolve their differences, but its sad that the county has achieved little two years down the line.We are now prepared to do away with the whole lot,” said Mohammed Ahmed, a trader.

Four MCAs were injured, two of them seriously in the battle that saw soda bottles and chairs used as weapons. It is alleged both sides of were armed with swords ready to unleash against each other before anti-riot police intervened.

During the fracas, the Minority Chief Whip Hassan Kumpa (Cherab, ODM) was injured in the left eye and Minority Leader Moses Kithinji (Bulapesa, TIP) received injuries on his forehead. They have both recorded statement with police and obtained P3 forms.

Deputy Speaker David Lemantile (TNA, Oldonyiro) and Hassan Shano (ODM, Nominated and representing the disabled) were also slightly injured.
