First aid skills can save lives

Shelby Kalekye had a bad day at school. She was playing with her friends when she stumbled and fell. She hurt her left leg and started crying in pain.

Shelby was lucky because her friend Joy Gathoni was playing nearby. Seeing her friend hurt, Joy ran to help her.

She helped Shelby sit comfortably. Then, she checked whether Shelby was still breathing.

She was.

Joy then asked Shelby how she was feeling to find out if she was still thinking clearly. After this, she inspected the injured leg.

Luckily, it was not seriously hurt and was only bleeding a little. After making sure the injured girl was out of danger, Joy called an ambulance to take her to hospital.

This incident did not really happen.

Pre-Unit children from Carmelvale Primary School in Donholm, Nairobi, were performing a skit to show their first aid skills and knowledge.

Joy Chepchumba was the narrator. They made the act look real.

Does your school have a first aid class? If you learn first aid skills you can save people’s lives.

"It is easy to get injured at school, home or in the streets. It is important for children to know how to help each other in case of danger," Chepchumba told Twinkle.

The actors ended their performance by telling the spectators that when someone is injured, knowing what to do and acting quickly can lessen the injury and pain as well as prevent death.
