Sisters fight with step-mothers over John Keen's multi-billion estate

The late veteran politician John Keen. [File, Standard] A fresh row has erupted over politician John Keen's multi-billion shilling estate after his two children moved to court to stop their step-mothers from selling the assets. Victoria Naishorua and her sister Eva Sein, in the suit filed at the High Court in Nairobi, claim that their step-mothers Pamela Soila and Rosemary Sanau have already sold their properties worth Sh1.4 billion and need to be stopped. "Their step-mothers have been intermeddling and transferring the properties to the detriment of the two beneficiaries. In just five years after their father's death, the two administrators have sold and wasted properties worth Sh1.4 billion," claimed their lawyer Peter Mugalo. The sisters want the court to stop Soila and Sanau from interfering with Keen's free estate comprising of 18 pieces of land spread across Ngong, Kajiado town and Loitoktok and to revoke the letters of administration which gave them authority to manage the properties. They also want the court to declare that that their step-mothers' decision to transfer 12 properties including pieces of land in Karen which formed part of their father's estate to Resson Gardens Limited was illegal, null and void. "The siblings are also seeking a court order to revoke the sale of four properties to James Kimani, Leonard Kimani, Jane Kamita and Andrew Mathenge as illegal and titles be transferred back to the estate." Other properties they claim their step-mothers have illegally sold and want reverted to their father's estate include 21 plots in Kilifi County sold to Coast Development Company Limited and another piece of land in Kilifi sold to one Rashid Abdi. Naishorua in her affidavit states that they are Keen's children from his first wife Gladwel Wairimu who died in 2020. She swore that the properties their step-mothers are disposing were acquired jointly by her parents during their 63 years of marriage including their matrimonial home in Karen which the step-mothers have allegedly sold. "My late father and mother lived in the property since 1973 but despite her owning the matrimonial home, it was irregularly sold by the executors of Keen's will between 2019 and 2020," she swore. She added that the step-mothers started sub-dividing the properties even before the court issued them with a grant of administration to manage the estate which amounts to criminal activities. Further, she alleged that the step-mothers had depleted Keen's Sh34 million he left at Standard Chartered Bank, Sh53 million at Kenya Commercial Bank, Sh1.8 million at Equity Bank and Sh641,141 at Credit Bank Limited. "Their intermeddling with 43 identified immovable properties located in Nairobi, Kilifi and Kajiado forming part of the estate of the late John Keen and Gladwell Wairimu Keen should not go unpunished," she swore. She added that they stand to suffer as the family of Keen's first wife if the step-mothers are not stopped from continuing to dispose the properties at will.
