Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje's bodyguard freed on Sh100,000 bail

The bodyguard of Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje, who was arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts over a Wednesday afternoon shooting incident, has been released on Sh100,000 cash bail.

Police Constable Eli Ojwang was arrested after he allegedly shot two men who sought to stop demolition of structures at Umoja 1 Primary School.

The victims were supporters of ex-area MP George Theuri.

According to Theuri, the youths were attacked as they tried to stop men allegedly contracted by Mwenje from demolishing their business structures.

Addressing journalists after recording a statement at Buruburu Police Station, Mwenje said he was holding a meeting at the institution to plan how to issue bursaries on Thursday.

He said the structures were being demolished in line with a directive by the Ministry of Education.

Mwenje further said his meeting was stormed by a group of youths and traders who sought to stop the planned demolition. As a result, a scuffle ensued between his camp and the group.

During the melee, two men were allegedly shot by his bodyguard. The victims were taken to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

One of the victims, Eric Angawa, who sustained a gunshot injury in the head, was referred to the Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The other victim, Felician Obilo, is still hospitalised at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

Buruburu Sub-County Police Commander Francis Kamau confirmed the incident, saying investigations were ongoing.
