A family in Mbuinjeru village, Embu County is seeking justice after their kin died after he was hit by a vehicle attached to the local Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU).

Daniel Murithi, 44, who was a businessman and operated a tuk-tuk is alleged to have been hit and killed by the police vehicle.

The family claim that police officers working on the case have been taking them in circles. They now suspect that there is a conspiracy to subvert justice.

At Murithi's home, a sombre mood engulfed, with friends and family gathering to plan his burial.

His widow, Wincate Mukami, 35, was overwhelmed by emotions as she narrated what transpired.

"We spent the day together as he repaired our tank at home. He left for Embu town at around 5:00 pm to purchase a tyre. At around 8:00 pm, I received a call informing me that he had been involved in an accident and had unfortunately, died," Mukami said.

She eulogised her husband of 14 years as a loving and supportive man.

Dishonesty

The deceased's brother, Moses Nyaga, said traffic officers investigating the matter have not been honest on how the investigations were being conducted.

"We went to report the matter, but we were informed there was no need since the driver had reported. However, they refused to show us details of what had been captured on the report," Nyaga said.

He further noted that so far, no witness had recorded any statement.

Nyaga called on human rights bodies to intervene and assist the family in seeking justice.

A Church elder, Jacob Njue, said the village was mourning a leader and a hardworking man.

"We have been to church together. He was a good man, who had no issues with anyone. He played a key role in the development of Mbuinjeru village." He called for stern action to be taken against the police driver for driving carelessly.

"It was wrong for him to overtake at high speed on a corner that is a black spot. The most unfortunate thing is that he never stopped after the accident," an angry Njue said.

Embu North Deputy County Commissioner William Owino refuted claims that there was a plan to subvert justice.

He assured the family that justice would be done and the law would also be followed adding that the case had to follow normal procedure.

"Investigations are underway and I appeal to the family and residents to be assured that action will be taken pursuant to the existing law."
