The government will deal with any security challenges that may arise during and after the August 9 elections, Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has said.

Yesterday Dr Matiang’i additional resources, including vehicles, had been released to security agencies.

According to the CS, an extra 350 vehicles were acquired by the government for use by regional and county commissioners. These besides some other 200 vehicles acquired earlier.

Every county commissioner will get an additional two vehicles for use by their deputies, the CS said, adding that these were some of the measures the government had put in place to make ensure the county administrators adequately oversee the August elections.

Dr Matiang'i spoke at the National Police Service Training College in Embakasi, Nairobi, during the passing out ceremony of 451 assistant county commissioners, who had been undergoing paramilitary training.

Dr Matiang'i said the government had so far taken note of cases of intolerance, negative ethnicity and hate speech. He urged county administrators to deal with such vices in their areas of command.

“You will be called upon to enhance overall coordination of security operations in the regions," the CS told the administrators.

He asked the county administrators to be professional in executing their mandate and called on them to be professional and avoid incidents that may tarnish the government's image.
