City businessman Nginyo Kariuki is dead

The late Lawrence Nginyo Kariuki.

Multiparty crusader and businessman Nginyo Kariuki died on Monday at Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi.

The Lawrence Nginyo Kariuki was an astute and successful businessman who is associated with Nginyo Towers on Koinange Street, Nairobi and Lenana Mount Hotel.

He will be remembered as a long standing politician who was instrumental in Kenya's quest for multiparty democracy.

Nginyo was also the founder member of The National Alliance Party (TNA).

He was a renowned golfer who pioneered African golf in Kenya.  

Life and times

 Nginyo Kariuki was born in 1938 in Githima in Ndumberi sub-location, Kiambu.

In an online publication, he described himself as a “leading farmer, businessman, politician; and a golfer of over forty years, both as an amateur and professional who has made significant contribution to the development of our country Kenya through hard work, commitment, respect for the rule and law and upholding high ethical standards.”

“From my very humble beginnings, I have been able to portray a case study for business innovation, savvy financial ability, innovation, confidence and excellent negotiation skills – in each enterprise I have engaged, in which evidence of value addition and transformation is present. As a highly motivated, decisive, results-oriented individual, my career is marked with demonstrable financial acumen evidenced by initiating pioneering and self-sustaining African business ownership and leadership in broad industries ranging from Agriculture, Hotel and Real Estate.,” he wrote in his blog.

He had a colourful sports career, rising from a caddie to the level of professional golfing standards where I pioneered Kenya’s participation in regional and international golf tournaments with exemplary performances.

Nginyo was a seasoned politician who was actively involved in the struggle for Kenya to adopt multi-party rule.

He is credited with the formation of The National Alliance (TNA) party which His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta used to ascend to presidency in 2013.
