Detectives raid hotel, arrest four Chinese nationals for caning staff

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested four Chinese nationals in connection with a viral video where a man of Asian descent was seen caning a local at Chez Wou Restaurant in Nairobi’s Kileleshwa area. 

The DCI said the four were arrested following investigation into the incident which elicited anger among Kenyans.

Detectives raided the hotel on Sunday and arrested Deng Hailan, a Chinese national who works at the hotel, Chang Yueping, Ou Qiang (chefs) and Yu Ling, a cashier at the high-end hotel.

 “Following reports of an incident doing rounds in sections of the press depicting a man of Asian descent assaulting a male employee said to be working at a hotel, this morning detectives from Kilimani raided Chez Wou Restaurant in Kileleshwa in pursuit of the matter,” tweeted DCI on Sunday.

Also arrested during the raid were eight locals who works at the hotel in various capacities.

“Eight locals have been escorted to Kilimani Police Station for further interrogation,” said DCI.

In the clip, an unidentified suspected to be Deng is seen asking a man believed to be a Kenyan to go down on his stomach as he held a cane in his hand.

The victims goes down and the Asian man descend on him caning him as colleagues watch from a distance.

The man could be heard asking his victim to choose which part of the body to be caned

He went further hitting the helpless waiter on his rib and he could be seen groaning with pain.

The man reported the matter to police prompting detectives top probe the matter.

The suspects will be arraigned on Monday to faces charges of assault.
