The Jubilee National Elections Board (NEB) has nominated footballer McDonald Mariga as its candidate for the Kibra by-election.

Mariga on Monday presented his papers at the Jubilee Party headquarters in Pangani for consideration by the NEB.

According to a statement by Jubilee’s NEB, 16 candidates expressed interest in the party’s ticket.

“I am pleased to announce that our vetting process has yielded a candidate of impeccable character and credentials, a person who has had an enduring connection with the people of Kibra,” read the statement.

The Andrew Musangi-led board started the interview at the party’s headquarters at around 9am and finished at 8pm.

The former international footballer was escorted to the Jubilee headquarters by a host of supporters who sang and danced.

The Kibra MP seat, which fell vacant following the death of Ken Okoth, has attracted a number of candidates from various parties.

ANC last week unveiled former Raila Odinga aide Eliud Owalo as its candidate in the race, while Ford Kenya will be represented by Khamisi Butichi.

ODM will on September 7 hold its nomination to pick a flag-bearer among the 11 aspirants who have been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The election will be held on November 7.
