Man killed in tiff over ‘sukuma wiki’

Nairobi, Nairobi: Police have arrested a man who killed his neighbour in a quarrel over a garden of sukuma wiki in Kawangware, Nairobi.

The quarrel broke out at the weekend after the suspect’s goats destroyed a garden of sukuma wiki belonging to the neighbour.

According to police and witnesses, the neighbour is said to have chased away the goats by whipping them out of the garden, angering the owner who picked a stone and hit him on the head.

Nairobi deputy police boss Moses Ombati said the owner of the garden fell unconscious and was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“We have arrested the accused and we intend to take him to court to face murder charges,” said Ombati.

Elsewhere, a street urchin was Sunday morning shot dead by police in a botched robbery at the Globe Cinema Roundabout, Nairobi.

The street urchin was in the company of four others and had been attacking and violently robbing pedestrians when police were alerted at about 7am.

Ombati said the street urchin was shot after he defied orders to surrender property he had snatched from a woman.

The shooting sparked a brief protest from the other street urchins before police dispersed them.

The body was later taken to the mortuary as police patrols were enhanced in the area.

Several people were robbed of their valuables at Globe Cinema Roundabout as it was raining.

Nickson Ndungu said he was walking to the city centre when he was attacked by the gang that was armed with stones and crude weapons.

Cases of attacks from street children have been on the rise in the city as some of them target private cars where they steal side mirrors.

Meanwhile, a man has written to police boss David Kimaiyo accusing police at Industrial Area of failing to take action in an incident in which he claims his wife drugged him.

In his letter, Kituku Kinyae said his wife had drugged him after a domestic quarrel before he reported at the police station on December 14, last year.
