Winners of the prestigious Fairmont Young Talent Competition were yesterday awarded at Marula Manor in Karen.

Now in its third year, the competition attracted submissions from eight schools in Nairobi and Rift Valley regions, which were Banda, Braeburn, Brookhouse, Hillcrest, Greensteds, Gems Makini, and Riara Springs schools.

The initiative by Destination Magazine and Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, aims at showcasing some of Kenya’s finest young writers while at the same time encouraging and promoting writing amongst students.

The competition was divided into two categories: Year Eight for students aged 12 – 13 years of age and Year 12 for those aged 16 – 17 years.

The winners who were accompanied by their families and representatives from their school were Penny Gaul (Year 8) and Jasmine Wamahiu (Year 12) of Banda and Brookhouse schools respectively. The runners up were Holly Troulan (Year 8) and Sharon Bosire (Year 12) still of Banda and Brookhouse schools respectively.

The entries were based on creativity, sense of the piece, research, characterisation and overall quality of writing including grammar.
