State charts new path for driving schools

By NICHOLAS WAITATHU

The Government is planning to introduce new regulations to control   driving schools.

Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary Michael Kamau yesterday said under the regulations, driving schools would be operated under a National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) approved curriculum. They will also have a common, approved syllabus to ensure drivers are well trained.

“Driving schools in the country must meet minimum standards before being licensed to offer training,” said Kamau.

He made the revelation during the Association of Kenya Insurers’ (AKI) road safety awards ceremony in Nairobi. Currently, registering and monitoring of driving schools is under the traffic police department.

Kenya Bus Service Management (KBS) Managing Director Edwin Mukabanah said driving schools in the country were not well regulated leading to poor services.

“We cannot say that there has not been any corruption in the driving school segment. Registration of the service providers has not been well done leading to high level of corruption and poor service delivery,” he said. KBS runs a driving school at its Kawangware station.
