Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho to defend himself in KCSE forgery probe

Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho

Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho will start defending himself against claims that he forged 1992 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination KCSE examination result slip with a Grade C+ on June 30.

The governor will defend himself through sworn affidavit after Justice Erick Ogola ordered the parties must give their evidence from June 30 after he rejected lawyer James Orengo application who wanted the case to be heard from July 24.

Last month Joho went to court and obtained orders stopping the state from prosecuting him over the alleged forgery.

Orengo who is representing Joho told the court that he had a busy schedule in July with election related cases in Nairobi and wanted the court to allow him to be heard in July.

"Among the cases I am representing my clients include the one involving tender for buying of ballot papers," said Orengo.

Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecution Alex Muteti insisted that the application should be heard in June instead of July.

Joho in his papers filed on May 19 says the issues being levelled against him, which were filed in court by Janet Mbete in 2013 were resolved by the court.

"I verily believe that revelation of Janet Mbete confirms my complaints that the purported investigation into the same matter are an abuse of the process of court and are actuated by malice," says Joho.

Joho denies any knowledge of having applied to join University of Nairobi with a forged 1992 KCSE examination result slip of Grade C+.

"I am a stranger to the allegation by Janet Mbeta that when applying for admission into the University of Nairobi I presented a forged certificate indicating I had attained an aggregate of C+ in the 1992 KCSE examination at Serani Secondary School," said Joho.

Joho says in the affidavit that he was perturbed by allegation because Janet Mbeta had no way of knowing what documents he used when applying for the admission to the University.

"This issue has lead me to the conclusion that the state and other actors have crafted a scheme of forging documents which they then attribute to me in order to justify the allegations made and the purported investigation that are being carried out unreasonably into every facet of my life," says Joho.

Joho insisted he never sat for KCSE examination in 1992 at Serani Secondary School. "I have never claimed I obtained an aggregate grade C+ in the said examination either in 1992 as alleged," says Joho.

The Governor gave chronology of his education achievements until he got a degree of Bachelor of Administration from Kampalal University in 2013.

He said did KCSE in 1992 and obtained D- grade before enrolling for Certificate Pre-University Course in 2006. He said after getting pre-university certificate, he enrolled for Certificate in Business administration which allowed him to pursue a diploma in Human Resource Management at Kampala University.

He said after Diploma he enrolled for Bachelor of Administration degree and was awarded the degree in 2013 by the senate after he satisfied them.

He said through his investigation he has found that Nairobi University which is not a complainant in the case carried its own investigation and failed to reach a conclusion indicting him.
