More glow, less shine

Skin Care

By 11' o clock, your forehead is all greasy and your make-up starts to run. You're also constantly battling zits, blackheads and spots. You're probably wondering what is amiss with your skin care. Although oils produced by the body help keep your skin healthy, too much oil production by the skin's sebacious glands can lead to blemishes and acne flare-ups. However, with the right skin care, you can get your oily skin balanced, naturally moisturised, and acne free.

1. Cleanser Dermatologists agree that the most important part of taking care of oily skin is to use a gentle cleanser twice a day- morning and night. Keep away from soap- unless it's specially formulated for oily skin. Harsh soaps can irritate skin and trigger it to produce even more oil. Instead, go for cleansers formulated for oily skin and containing ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, and beta-hydroxy acid. However, since these ingredients can also irritate skin, buy a small size to test with first.

2. Toner Toners help close up pores and reduce oil production. However, some people also find the astringent properties in toners to be irritating to the skin, which can lead to more oil production. If you've oily skin, you're safer applying toner on the usual problem areas; your forehead, nose and chin. Avoid using toner on the dry areas of your face as that will create unhealthy and unsightly dry patches.

3. Moisturiser Oily skin also needs to be moisturised. To avoid the dreaded shine, go for light water based, oil-free moisturisers. It's generally advisable to keep away from heavy creams and lotions. You can also go for serums as they tend to be deeply moisturising without being greasy. Additionally, serums come with anti-aging and clarifying elements.

4. Sunscreen The usual sunscreen formulations pose a problem for people with oily skin. They tend to be pretty thick and greasy and can block pores causing some irritation on the skin thus more acne breakouts. However, protecting your skin from harmful sun rays is still mandatory. Dermatologists advise that people with oily skin to opt for sunscreen gels and powders which are less likely to leave your skin looking greasy
