More than 400 pupils of Karaba Consolata Primary School in Mbeere South sub-county held peaceful demonstrations to protest the jailing of their head teacher, Patrick Mutuku, for court contempt.
The pupils, accompanied by their parents, boycotted classes and camped at Karaba Primary School where other head teachers as well as Ministry of Education and teachers' union officials met to discuss the arrest.
Waving twigs, they sang songs demanding justice for their teacher and disrupted learning at Karaba.
Parents and board members said Mr Mutuku, who was posted at the school last term, was arrested on Wednesday and jailed for 30 days for a crime he was unaware of.
Martha Nganga, a board member representing the sponsor Catholic Church, said Mutuku was jailed for failing to attend court sessions.
She said the teacher was not aware of the case or any summons to have him arrested as he was new at the school, which is accused of failing to pay a contractor Sh400,000 arrears for the construction of two classrooms.
