If there’s a perfect time to make a hearty pot of bone broth, it is right now. During a time when a killer virus is on the loose, our immune systems need to be as strong as possible. This protein-rich brew is a great immune booster with additional skin and health benefits. The thought of consuming a soup made from bones may put some people off but its health benefits will make you think otherwise.

Bone broth needs to simmer for a much longer period of time in comparison to a basic stock. Bone broth can be made using bones from different meats such as beef, chicken, lamb, turkey and even fish.

With all the health benefits that come with bone broth, you certainly need a batch of it in your home (Instagram: @ketogeniccom)

Stock is popularly used in place of water when it comes to cooking stews, sauces, vegetables and even grains such as rice. This stock gives regular dishes a rich depth of flavour but drinking it on its own also has wonderful health benefits.

Bone broth, which is enriched with more nutrients, can heal your gut by sealing holes in the intestines, fight inflammation in the body, increase collagen production which is great for skin as well as strengthen the immune system, bones and muscles. With all the health benefits that come with bone broth, you certainly need a batch of it in your home.

Let the mixture simmer in a saucepan or slow cooker for 10-24 hours (YouTube: Pro Home Cooks)

This brew is simple to make and only three ingredients are needed to make a plain batch. Simply boil approximately 2 kgs of animal bones in 4 litres of water. Add some salt to taste but if you want to enrich the flavour of the broth, you can throw in a couple of vegetables such as onions, garlic and carrots. Let the mixture simmer in a saucepan or slow cooker for 10-24 hours. Strain it once cooled and freeze any leftovers for later use.

What ‘old person’ things do you do?
