Second year University student cries out for help from her hospital bed

Embu, Kenya: Caroline Warue Ireri, who is a second year student at Moi University studying Bachelor of Education -Guidance and counselling is currently confined in a hospital bed in Embu Level 4 hospital. The doctors say that she is suffering from acute Leukaemia.

She says that in December 2014, she started feeling dizzy with persistent headaches.   When she underwent a haemoglobin level test at a local hospital, it revealed that her haemoglobin levels were lower than normal.

Despite her family getting her the prescribed medication the problem did not go away and even got worse. She underwent a series of blood transfusions which temporarily improved her condition but within no time her condition worsened again.

After seeking specialised opinion on her condition a bone marrow test was done and she was diagnosed with acute Leukemia. She was the referred to Kenyatta hospital where she would undergo chemotherapy.

Soon she had undergone four sessions of chemotherapy but her condition did not improve, the cells had not responded. This was really devastating to her. Her parents have so far sold a piece of land, two cows and organised a Harambee to clear the Sh1.1 million hospital bill.

The doctors have recommended a bone marrow transplant in India for which Sh6million is needed.

‘My plea is to everybody who can help me get out of this situation, save my life, I want to go back to school and complete my education. Please do so. Help me get to India and have the transplant. I will be happy to live a healthy life like any other Kenyan. I don’t want to be confined in this bed any longer. This far I have seen Gods Mighty works and hope to see more. To other people in my situation never lose hope. Always be encouraged. You are never alone. God is by your side and He provides for those who believe in Him.’ She wrote from her hospital bed.
