Mudavadi must resign to save ODM

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Local Government Musalia Mudavadi is in a spot as the cemetery land saga unfolds.

While the manner in which the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission has handled his case has been suspect, the scandal has damaged the image and credibility of ODM.

Kenyans are now watching to see how Prime Minister Raila Odinga will handle this mess involving his deputy and key ally.

Raila is in an awkward position because if he ‘goes slow’ on Mudavadi and Nairobi Mayor Geoffrey Majiwa, he’ll be accused of applying double standards and thus condoning graft. This would greatly injure his reputation.

For the sake of the party and it’s followers, Mudavadi and Majiwa should step aside to facilitate thorough investigation in the ministry and at the council.

By stepping aside only to be later cleared by KACC, Mudavadi would emerge stronger and with higher approval ratings. More important, his action would send a strong message to Kenyans that ODM does not condone graft and there are no sacred cows. This would also restore Kenyan’s trust and confidence in the party .

Let there be a clear difference between ODM and PNU on how to deal with the never-ending circus of official corruption.

Mudavadi’s claims that KACC didn’t take his views before issuing a report on the cemetery saga are misleading and political.

Perhaps he wanted to wriggle his way out of the scandal. The minister heads a docket that approved the fraudulent purchase of land so why should he now complain about the KACC report?

The events of the past week show how seriously his office is committed to squandering public money. Mudavadi, we are tired of politics and time has come for action. Please resign and allow someone more responsible to take over.

It does not need a rocket scientist to work out that the cemetery scam was planned and executed by Treasury, Local Government ministry and the city council.

Unfortunately, PNU and ODM politics are now at play. Somebody wants the DPM out so that ODM cannot solidify its hold in Western Province.

This scheme is bound to fail because these are our leaders and we know them. The land scam was done behind Mudavadi’s back.
