Herbert Ochieno of Mumias Eagle Club emerged the winner in the 18-and-under category of the United Millers Nyanza Junior Open Tennis Tournament staged at the Nyanza Club, Kisumu over the weekend.

Ochieno whitewashed Felix Odhiambo of Kisumu Day high School 6-0, before edging Rogers Otieno 7-5 in tightly contested encounter played in a round robin format.

Sukhbir Singh from Braeburn School, Kisumu announced his superiority to his only opponent in the boy’s 16-and under category Clinton Amara of Kisumu Day High School after whipping him 4-0 the first round and 4-3 in the final round.

In the 10 and under boys’ category, Aftan Kara from Kisumu Junior Academy beat Anjan Virdee from Braeburn School, Kisumu 4-1 in the semis-finals. Earlier in the quarters, Kara hit Cecil Matinde from Aga Khan Primary School 6-4, while Virdee beat Deep K Patel from Kisumu Junior Academy 6-0.

Aryan Panchmatia from Kisumu Junior Academy beat Karan Dhanjal from Braeburn School in the second semi-final encounter 6-2.

Round-robin format

In the boys’ Under-8 age category, Tejas Sumriya of Kisumu Junior Academy won the round robin format after defeating Shadrack Ogolla of Marigold Spring Academy 6-4 and Martin Bechtel of Braeburn School Academy 6-3.

In the girls’ Under-12 category playoffs, Simar Virdee from Braeburn School beat Linet Odunga from Aga Khan Primary School, Kisumu 6-3, in the semis as Mary Okongo of Migosi Primary School beat Linet Odunga of Aga Khan Kisumu 6-1 in the other semi-final encounter.

In the final, Okongo defeated Roshni Gudka of Kisumu Senior Academy 6-0 to lift the title.

Sponsor tournaments

In the boys’ doubles finals, Lefteris Ngugi of France and Maureece Hugo of Braeburn School Kisumu beat the pair of Aaftan Kara and Tabrez Kara, both of Kisumu Junior and Senior Academy 7-5 to emerge the winners.

In the girls’ doubles category, Linda Janet and Okongo, both of Migosi Primary School, beat the pair of Odunga of Aga Khan and Virdee of Braeburn School.

More than 80 participants drawn from around the country took part in the event that was graced by Sunil Shah, Managing Director of United Millers Limited, Sajni Shah, Manager United Millers, Esther Pasaris and the Kenya Lawn Tennis Association Vice Chairman Martin Oluoch.

Shah said United millers was happy to sponsor the tournament and that they would help develop lawn tennis in the region by sponsoring other tournaments in the region.

Oluoch thanked United Millers for sponsoring the tournament and asked other companies to join forces in developing sports.
