Academy to spread tennis in Western Kenya

Kisumu's Victoria Tennis Academy and Amani Na Upendo Development Group has unveiled an ambitious programme aimed at promoting tennis in Western Kenya Region.

The programme, which targets youth from poor backgrounds,

Is aimed at equipping youth with skills while at the same time seeking sports scholarship opportunities for the players, will be based at Victoria Academy.

Speaking during the just concluded International Tennis Federation East Africa Circuit 18 and Under tournament held at Parklands Sports Club, Victoria’s Collins Agwanda said the programme, which begins in July, targets to reach players from Kisii, Bungoma, Mumias, Kakamega, Eldoret, Nakuru and Kericho.

OPPORTUNITIES

Amani Na Upendo Development Group’s Paul Kaundah emphasised the need to give children from poor backgrounds opportunities to excel.

Meanwhile, former top Kenyan tennis player Allan Cooper has expressed willingness to partner with Victoria Academy in taking tennis to schools in the region.

Copper, who runs Ace Tennis Performance Academy based in Nairobi’s Parklands Sports Club, said: "We plan to tour tennis playing schools in Western Kenya Region to conduct training sessions."
