Kwale Court detains terror suspect for two weeks

A man police claim was found with a grenade and a detonator in his house will be detained for two weeks.

A court gave the order after police requested for time to conclude investigations on Mwandego Mohamed, who they allege is a terrorist.

Mr Mwandego was arrested in Zibani village, Ng'ombeni, on Tuesday night after he was allegedly found in possession of a Russian-made grenade, a detonator code, an electrical detonator and cast booster.

Kwale Principal Magistrate Cosmas Maundu allowed an application by Matuga DCIO Stephen Muli to have the suspect detained.

Muli said he had been advised by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to seek more time to complete investigations.

"The suspect is believed to be involved in terrorism activities," he said.

Mohamed, said to be Ugandan, was arrested by officers from the Flying Squad Unit.

The suspect did not object to the application by police. "I have no objection. However, I am urging the court to direct that they take me to hospital because I am not feeling well," he said.

"My legs and chest have problems and so I ask this honorable court to ensure I am treated," he added.

Maundu directed that the suspect receive medical attention and be kept in remand until September 22 when his case will be mentioned.
