An Eldoret court has ordered that a terror suspect linked to Kapenguria Police Station gun attack where seven policemen were killed, be remanded for 30 days pending investigation.
This was after police sought more time to conclude investigations before the case against Omar Okwoki Eumod, a teacher at Victoria Primary School, begins.
The suspect was arrested on July 13 at Kacheliba, West Pokot County and taken to Kapenguria Police Station, on suspicion of radicalising the youth to join Al Shabaab and involvement in terror activities.
Eumod was to be charged before a Kapenguria court on Thursday but was brought to Eldoret following the attack at the police station.
In an affidavit filed under miscellaneous application, police said they have reasons to believe the suspect is the ring-leader of a terrorists group in West Pokot County which carried out an attack to rescue Eumod from lawful custody, leading to the killing of the officers.
Police argued releasing the suspect may result into a threat.
Senior Principal Magistrate Charles Obulutsa granted the orders and ruled the suspect be brought to court on August 12 for the mention of the case.
Last evening, a teacher at Victoria Primary School who did not wish to be named told The Standard on Saturday yesterday that Omar Okwaki Eumod had taught at the institution for the last two months.
He claimed Eumod was hired by the school committee as a Parents Teachers Association (PTA) teacher and has been teaching English and Kiswahili since May.
“I don’t exactly know his background but he graduated from Kericho Teachers College and hails from Sioy area in West Pokot,” said the teacher.
He added that a teacher from another school introduced him to Victoria and the committee took him through an interview.
