State House intruder found dead after being freed

Mystery surrounds the death of a man who was arrested after sneaking into State House last month.

William Ngene's body was found in Uhuru Park on April 7, two days after he had been set free by a Nairobi court.

He had a wound to the head inflicted by a blunt object and it is not clear who was behind his death.

He also had injuries to his anus and police believe he was sodomised.

It took police almost two weeks to identify Mr Ngene and inform the family.

The body of the handcart pusher had been lying at City Mortuary.

When police contacted Ngene's family in Mutuini, Dagoretti they realised they were not aware of his death.

Ngene was arrested on March 6 by General Service Unit officers after he sneaked into State House. He was handed over to detectives from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit.

He was later charged with entering a protected area.

Ngene told the Nairobi Chief Magistrate Daniel Ogemba that he only wanted to look around.

He was freed from remand on April 5, officials said.

It is not clear where he spent the two nights before his body was found.

The 29-year-old Ngene jumped two fences and started loitering in the presidential residence before he was arrested.

He said he was disappointed as the security officers nabbed him before he was able to have a good look.

There have been other incidents in which people have been arrested for sneaking into State House.

In 2015, Walter Juma sneaked into State House claiming that he was President Uhuru Kenyatta's friend. He was arrested and charged in court.
