Kazungu Kambi quizzed over Muchai murder remarks

Kenya: Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi has been questioned by police over his remarks regarding the killing of former Kabete MP George Muchai.

MPs Alice Ng'ang'a (Thika), Francis Waititu (Juja) and Moses Kuria (Gatundu South) have also been interviewed by CID detectives.

They all recorded statements with the police investigating the incident and denied making utterances pointing fingers at individuals they claimed had something to do with Muchai's murder.

Mr Kambi was questioned in his office last Monday when he also recorded his statement, while the MPs were summoned to the Nairobi Area CID offices, police said.

"Of course they all denied making the remarks. Our work is to put their word against the audio we received. Let us wait and hear from the relevant authorities," said an officer aware of the probe but who asked not to be named.

The grilling was in connection with the remarks the four made linking Cotu officials to the murder of Muchai and his three aides.

A court has already restrained the four from making defamatory statements against the Cotu officials.

MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Seven suspects were charged with the murders on Friday.

The suspects were initially charged in the High Court in Nairobi but were later taken to a magistrate's court, where they were charged with robbery with violence.

The seven are Erick Muyera Isabwa alias Chairman, Raphael Kimani alias Butcher, Mustafa Kimani alias Musto, Stephen Asitiva Lipapo alias Chokori, Jane Wanjiru Kimani alias Shiro, Margaret Njeri alias Waciuri and Simon Wambugu Gichamba.

They were charged with murdering the MP, his two bodyguards, Samuel Kimathi Kairikia and Samuel Lekakey Matanta, and his driver Stephen Ituu Wambugu, on Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi on the night of February 7.

Justice Jessie Lessit directed the deputy registrar to appoint a lawyer to represent the suspects before they take a plea on March 19.
